When I take my students out into the streets,
the focus is to get them physically and emotionally close to the subjects they photograph.
They are taught to approach people with care
and respect, learning new ways to develop
intimacy and trust with others.
The students learn to listen more than they
speak, looking for an emotion or gesture
which they feel tells a story.
While the idea is to have the students make
strong photographs, equally important is that they have collaborative interactions, which they and the subjects will remember as
positive,
empowering
experiences.
